Lehigh Valley Alco PA-1. Always on Sunday! 1962

After Lehigh Valley discontinued passenger service, the Alco PA-1s were utilized in freight service. This one is shuffling cars on industrial spurs in Clark, New Jersey. On weekdays, this work was performed by an EMD SW7, usually No. 222.

The track is part of the short Bloodgood Branch. U. S. Gypsum and Hyatt Bearing provided many carloads for LV. The last time I checked, the track was still there, but there is no business requiring rail service. Both factories were razed and replaced with shopping and a golf course. A small portion of the massive Hyatt plant shows in the photo.

Long before the time of this photo, a Public Service trolley line ran next to the LV here. One could ride all the way from Westfield to Perth Amboy and beyond. I’d love to see photos of that line, but haven’t come across any.

Taken with an old Vokar camera. It was solid and well made, but the lens was mediocre at best.
